All-Star Ty France hit a two-run homer while rookie George Kirby pitched six innings in the opening game of Saturday afternoon's doubleheader as the Seattle Mariners beat the visiting Los Angeles Angels, 2-1.

On Friday night, the Mariners evened the four-game series one at a time after Los Angeles won 4-3 in the 10th inning. It was Seattle's second win of the season in seven home games against the Angels.

Kirby (3-3) allowed one run on six hits. A right-hander, he didn't walk a hitter and stole eight. Eric Swanson worked ninth with his career-high third save.

Tie 1-0, the Mariners scored all the runs they needed in the third inning.

Cal Raleigh took the lead on his four pitches before being wiped out by Jarred Kelenic's ground ball to short. Kerenic said he stole second and right-hander Jaime he threw Barrier (1-2) to advance him to third. France then hit his 1-0 pitch into the Mariners' left center field bullpen to make it 2-1.

Barrier allowed him 3 hits in 4 2/3 innings, allowing 2 runs, 4 walks and 3 strikeouts.

He scored in the second inning for the Angels.

Joe Adele took the lead with a ground rules double to right center field. Kurt Suzuki then hit a bloop single to center sending Adele to third. Acquired at the trade deadline from Philadelphia, former No. 1 overall draft pick Mickey Moniak hit Adele with a sharp single to right field.

He had the bases loaded in the fifth inning but failed to score for the Mariners. A Kelenic single and his two-out walk to France and Jesse Winker ended the Barrier afternoon. Relief Mike Mayers ended the threat by having Carlos Santana foul third baseman Jose Rojas.

Matt Andrés Muñoz struck out Shohei Ohtani on his third consecutive pitch after his Festa stole his first two outs in the seventh inning on behalf of Kirby. is.
