Tyson-Jones fight ends in draw

Mike Tyson, 54, and Roy Jones Jr., 51, fought to a draw in an eight-round exhibition boxing match Saturday night in Los Angeles.

ESPN’s unofficial scorecard had Tyson winning 79-73, while USA Today and both had Tyson on top 78-74.

Tyson said to Jones post-match, “We have to do this again one more time.”

Tyson, who posted a 50-6 career record with two no-contests, last fought in a competitive match in 2005, when he took a third loss in four bouts. He won his first heavyweight championship belt in 1986, and he was the undisputed world champion from 1987-90. After spending three years in prison after a rape conviction, he regained pieces of the heavyweight crown in 1996.

Jones first entered the spotlight when he won a silver medal as a light middleweight in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He went on to hold the world middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight championships during a career that saw him start 49-1 before he ended up at 66-9. He competed as recently as 2018, winning a 10-round decision against Scott Sigmon in Pensacola, Fla.

On the undercard, former NBA point guard Nate Robinson was knocked out in the second round by YouTube star Jake Paul in a light heavyweight match. Robinson, a 5-foot-9 former NBA Slam Dunk champion, is 36, is 13 years older and four inches shorter than Paul.

After taking the decisive blow, Robinson fell face-first to the canvas as the referee immediately stopped the fight. Paul then challenged UFC star Conor McGregor to a boxing match.

Famed boxing promoter Teddy Atlas tweeted, “Tyson won, not sure about anyone else. But I’m sure the promoters did, and this isn’t the last we’ve seen of this stuff.”
