On Wednesday, senior UN officials are scheduled to meet with Myanmar's military leadership. It was a rare high-profile visit at a time of growing political turmoil and violence in the country.

Earlier last year, the military overthrew the elected government of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and launched a bloody crackdown on the ensuing peaceful protests and armed resistance. Since then, Myanmar has been in turmoil.

Noreen Hayser arrived in Naypyidaw and was greeted by foreign ministry officials, his military-controlled Myawaddy television reported late Tuesday.

Hazer will meet with Min Aung Hlaing, head of the military government, and senior ministers. The United Nations said in a statement earlier this week that she would "focus on addressing the deteriorating situation and pressing concerns".

Details of her travels have not been disclosed.

A spokesperson for the military government did not respond to a request for comment.

Global condemnation has been directed at Myanmar's generals, most recently citing attacks by militias seeking to fight military rule and avenge a deadly crackdown on protests, They have been accused of executing four pro-democracy activists they said they supported "terrorist acts".

A Myanmar court also sentenced Suu Kyi to a lengthy prison term on what critics say was a trumped-up charge intended to permanently block her return to politics.

She was found guilty of her four corruption cases and sentenced to six years in prison on Monday, a source familiar with the proceedings said.

The 77-year-old veteran leader faces at least 18 charges against her, ranging from corruption to electoral fraud, which together carry a maximum sentence of almost 190 years in prison. Suu Kyi has called her accusations ludicrous and denies all accusations against her.

Suu Kyi, who is being held in solitary confinement in a prison in the capital Naypyidaw, said in another case He had already been sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Hazer has not requested a meeting with Suu Kyi, a spokesperson for the military government, Zaw Minh Tung, said on Tuesday.

Zaw Min Tun will hold a regular press conference later Wednesday. (Reported by Reuters Staff; Written by Kanupriya Kapoor; Edited by Lincoln Feast)
