Washington — US Deputy Secretary of Finance Wally Adeyemo visited Turkey this week to discuss Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the enforcement of sanctions imposed on Moscow, the Treasury said in a statement on Saturday.
Adeyemo visited Turkey from Wednesday to Friday to meet with officials from Ankara's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Treasury and Treasury, and to talk with financial institutions in Istanbul, the Treasury said.
The Treasury said Adeyemo had talked with financial institutions about the implementation and enforcement of Western sanctions imposed on Russia after the February 24 invasion of Ukraine, which killed or injured thousands. ..
"All parties want to prevent Turkey from being used as a paradise for illegal financing and continue to protect the integrity of the banking sector." ..
Washington and its allies have imposed some sanctions targeting Moscow since the invasion of Ukraine. This includes targeting Ukraine's largest lenders and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Since launching what is called a special operation to demilitarize Ukraine, Russia has bombed cities into rubble and found civilian bodies in a town where troops have withdrawn. It denies targeting civilians and states that signs of atrocities were staged without evidence.
Kyiv has criticized Turkey for being reluctant to impose sanctions on Russia since the invasion, but to end the war by welcoming both officials for peace talks. We also thank Ankara for his diplomatic and military support. (Report by Daphne Psaledakis, edited by Alistair Bell)
