KYIV — A Ukrainian court sentenced a Russian soldier to 10 years in prison on Monday after being convicted of violating law of war in a high-rise apartment, Interior Ministry officials said.

A court in northeastern Chernihiv found Mikhail Krikov captured in battle on February 26, two days after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, for attacking a house in Ukraine. Anton Herashchenko, an aide to the Minister of Interior, said.

Krikov said he was obeying orders, so he pleaded guilty to the trial and sought more generous punishment, the Ukrainian prosecutor's office said.

He said the residential block attacked in Chernihiv was not used for military purposes, not for military purposes.

Russia denies that its troops intentionally target civilians in what is called a special military operation.

Ukraine is investigating allegations of about 26,000 war crimes committed during the war and indicting 135 people, its chief war crimes prosecutor told Reuters last week.

Of those charged, about 15 were detained in Ukraine and the remaining 120 were still large, prosecutors said. (Report by Natalia Zinets, Written by Tom Balmforth, Edited by Nick Macfie)
