Montreal filmmaker Xavier Dolan has directed a new commercial for luxury Chopard watches starring Julia Roberts.

The ad has the Hollywood star dancing in front of the camera to the tune of British singer Paloma Faith’s 2009 song Upside Down.

“I was really flattered and, I think, intimidated too because I’ve never done an ad before,” Dolan said in a video interview on the Chopard website.

“So my reaction was that I was content, I was happy,” said Dolan.

On working with Roberts, he said “It gave it a whole new meaning. She’s been important in my life and my story, via Erin Brockovitch for example. So knowing I was going to be lucky enough to work with her was obviously exciting for me.”

The campaign is titled Happy Diamonds and features the Happy Sport collection of watches.

It is Dolan’s first experience directing an ad campaign, but the Montreal director previously appeared as an actor in a 2016 Louis Vuitton ad.

In a statement, Chopard president Caroline Scheufele explained why she chose Roberts: “It was her and nobody else. Julia Roberts was the only person I felt could convey the spirit that I see in Happy Sport.”
