Costa Rican soccer player Bryan Ruiz officially retires from National Team

Bryan Ruiz Gonzalez played for the Costa Rican National Team for 17 years. ‘El Capi,’
announced he would hang his cleats for good after the World Cup. It was a nostalgic
moment for Ruiz, his family, and a whole country that watched his extraordinary career
evolve.
“It’s been an incredible journey that started with my grandfather. I remember my
beginnings, and now it’s over. Of course, it’s nostalgic, but it’s part of it,” commented
Bryan after the game against Germany.
Few words can describe Ruiz’s extraordinary career. For years, he played at the highest
level and delivered great performances.
“I spent 17 years defending Costa Rica. I will always treasure the good memories,
qualifying for three World Cups, and the goals. It was an incredible journey. It has been
an honor defending the National Team; it’s the most beautiful thing soccer has given
me,” pointed out Ruiz.
Costa Rica’s historic player also said he will “miss playing soccer.” However, he knew
this moment was coming and prepared himself for it. Unfortunately, all good things
come to an end.
Bryan revealed that many people tried to convince him to keep playing, but his decision
was final.
“I want to thank those who tried to convince me, but I am stubborn, and my decisions
are well thought out. There is no turning back. This was what I wanted this year: to retire
at the World Cup,” he said.
The Costa Rican legend played 146 matches, 55 in qualifying games, 23 in the Gold
Cup, three in the Copa América, and nine in the World Cup. Bryan Ruiz scored 20 goals
and played 10,000 minutes wearing La Sele’s shirt.
His final game will be held at the Alejandro Morera Soto Stadium, where Liga Deportiva
Alajuelense and FC Twente will be on December 17th. In this game, the Costa Rican
player will have his dream fare well with the two teams he deeply loves.
From all Ticos: it’s been a pleasure; thank you, Bryan Ruiz!
