Speaking at the London School of Economics on Monday, Ms Pelosi insisted that a US-UK trade agreement would be a “non-starter” if the Belfast Agreement were undermined. Ms Pelosi has become the most senior American politician to warn against a trade deal between the two countries as Brexit negotiations continue. The House of Representatives Speaker claimed that there would be “no chance whatsoever” of a US-UK trade deal between the two allies if the Irish peace process is harmed in her bold statement.

Speaking at the event, Ms Pelosi said: “If there was to be any weakening of the Good Friday accords that there would be no chance whatsoever – a non-starter – for the US-UK trade agreement.

“The Good Friday accords ended 700 years of conflict.

“It is not just about that geography. This is not a treaty only.

“It is an ideal; it is a value. It is something that is a model to the world, something we all take pride in.”

Ms Pelosi also revealed that in talks with Theresa May, pro-Brexit hardliners and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, she had warned of the outcome of a hard border between the Republic and Northern Ireland.

The Democrat's comments come after Theresa May agreed on another extension to Brexit.

With the UK quickly approaching the departure date of April 12 last week, the EU granted Mrs May an extension until October 31.

The desperate extension stopped the chance of a no deal Brexit and gave the Prime Minister a further six months to ratify or alter her Brexit deal.

Following the Brexit extension, US President Donald Trump issued a threat to shake-up America’s trading relationship with the EU.

Tweeting, Trump said: “Too bad that the European Union is being so tough on the United Kingdom and Brexit.

“The EU is likewise a brutal trading partner with the United States, which will change.

“Sometimes in life you have to let people breathe before it all comes back to bite you!”
