The lowest limit in the country, down from the current 20mph, is to be installed in London.

It could hit motorists in the City of London – the square mile – as early as 2021.

The move, which has been voted for by the City of London Corporation, is aimed at reducing collisions.

It is also hoped to prioritise pedestrians and cyclists in the bustling UK capital.

The corporation’s leaders say they want to slash traffic in the capital by a quarter by 2030.

But the new 15mph speed limit will need to be approved by the government’s Department for Transport.

If given the green light then the new measure will be in place within the next two years.

Alastair Moss, chairman of the planning and transportation committee at the City of London Corporation, said: "We are working tirelessly to support the 513,000 workers that commute to the Square Mile every day, and to deliver the forward-thinking City that Londoners want to see.

"These radical plans will ensure the continued success of not just the City, but wider London and the UK as a leading global business and cultural destination."

But AA president Edmund King said switching the limit from 20mph to 15mph is "not likely to make much difference" as traffic in the Square Mile has "moved no faster than a horse and cart for 100 years anyway".

He added: "All road users and pedestrians being more alert, abiding by the rules of the road and putting away their phones would probably be more effective than reducing the limit."

The City of London Corporation’s radical plans to reduce the usage of vehicles has already seen casualty numbers plummet.

Its ban on traffic at Bank junction between 7am and 7pm on weekdays - except buses and bicycles - has halved injury numbers since it was introduced in May 2017.
