IT seems money really can’t buy you love after it was revealed celebrities who splash the cash on engagement rings are more likely to break up.
While A-lister will probably spend more than the average person, it seems there is such a thing as too much.
It appears ‘divorce rings’ are worth up to six times as much as the bling on the finger of a couple who stays together.
Diamond experts from 77Diamonds revealed the average cost of an engagement ring from couples who stay together is a mere £196,719.
In contrast, couples who were doomed to fail spent on average a whopping £1,357,311 on a rock.
The company analysed 170 celebrity couples who got engaged between June 2013 to 2018, and experts calculated the cost of rings of couples who split and stayed together.
And a study by co-authored by Andrew Francis-Tan, associate professor at the National University of Singapore and Hugo M. Mialon, associate professor at Emory University, found similar links between ring cost and longevity.
NBC quoted him saying: “Perhaps those couples who tend to have lavish weddings are simply those couples who tend not to be the best match for each other.
“On the other hand, it is also possible that having an expensive wedding burdens couples financially (conditioning on their income) in a way that may later strain their marriage."
Similarly Christie Tcharkhoutian, a licensed marriage and family therapist, told NBC News: “Lavish spending and focus on materialism may be a distraction from other issues in the relationship.
"The planning of a wedding/engagement takes up a lot of time and energy invested towards the event which may be a welcome distraction for couples who do not have a solid foundation or have serious concerns about the relationship to begin with.”
Engagement rings have been in the public eye lately with the engagement of Princess Eugenie to Jack Brooksbank after seven years together.
The 28-year-old’s engagement ring is a coral-coloured padparadscha sapphire, surrounded by diamonds.
The ring, which is similar to her mother’s, is estimated to be worth £7,000, which should bode well for the couple’s future.
In contrast, popstar Ariana’s Grande’s engagement ring from Pete Wicks is estimated to have cost a whopping £70,270 ($93,000).
The sparkler is said to have been especially made for Ariana, and consists of a 3.03 carat diamond set in platinum.
The couple got engaged following a whirlwind romance which reportedly only lasted a few weeks.
