FINDING affordable theatre tickets can be a right song and dance.
But ahead of World Theatre Day tomorrow, you can catch a showstopper for less with my five-star tips.
- West is best. London’s West End isn’t cheap but there are deals out there for savvy theatregoers. Grab a theatre trip and dinner for two with Virgin Experience Days for just £99, with upper-circle or balcony seats. Upper-circle seats for Wicked, for example, usually retail for around £64.75 each. So you are already saving more than £30 before adding the bonus of dinner. SAVING: At least £30.50.
- There’s no place like home. If you can’t catch a show locally and you don’t fancy an expensive trek further afield, make a night of it at home. Get DVDs of classic musicals such as Grease, Mary Poppins and The Rocky Horror Show on Amazon for just £4.89 — far less than a £44.80 ticket to see Grease at the Leeds Grand Theatre. SAVING: £39.91.
- Remember me. Some theatres offer discounted or even FREE seats to fill out thin audiences. Schemes such as Central Tickets and ShowFilmFirst give their members access to great offers. It is worth signing up to ShowFilmFirst even if you live outside London, as you can get tickets for local cinemas, comedy clubs and theatres, too. SAVING: £64.75 on a London upper-circle seat.
- Wing it. Many theatres hold back some seats, which then sell at super-cheap prices on the day of the show. If you don’t want to simply turn up and hope for the best, phone the box office and ask. They should tell you. When it comes to big shows, a late ticket is usually around £15. (Pre-sold seats nearby will have sold for FIVE TIMES this amount.) Late tickets tend to go on sale at 10am. SAVING: Around £60 each.

SEE family comedy adventure Missing Link first – we are giving away 5,000 tickets to a preview screening for Hugh Jackman’s new movie.
He stars as dashing adventurer Sir Lionel Frost, who sees himself as the world’s foremost investigator of myths and monsters.
The trouble is, no one else agrees. He sees a chance to prove himself by going in search of a living remnant of Man’s primitive ancestry. The Missing Link.
Zach Galifianakis is Mr. Link, the slightly silly, surprisingly smart and soulful beast who Sir Lionel discovers. He’s lonely and he believes that Sir Lionel is the one man alive who can help him. Together they set out on a daring quest around the world in search of the fabled valley of Shangri-La.
