HOLLYWOOD is well known for its on-screen magic, using both green screen tech and incredible prosthetics to bring to life fantasy.
But one star took things to a whole new level with their role in 2018 horror thriller Suspiria – using incredible make-up to transform themselves into a whole new person.
Tilda Swinton has finally come clean about her elaborate hoax, which included hours of prosthetics - and even wearing a fake penis - for the role.
When pictures emerged from the set, the 57-year-old British actress was compared to octogenarian first-time actor Lutz Ebersdorf's character Dr Josef Klemperer.
But director Luca Guadagnino was quick to dismiss claims they were the same person as "fake news".
The Oscar winner – who has also starred in Marvel blockbuster Doctor Strange - has now revealed how she managed to disguise herself as an 82-year-old man.
Taking things way beyond what famed method actors Marlon Brando or Daniel Day Lewis may have done, she admits she even had a set of prosthetic male genitals made to alter the way she walked.
And to complete the cover-up, Swinton planted a false biography of her new persona, Lutz Ebersdorf, on the internet.
But she was unmasked after hinting that she had played a second uncredited cameo in the film, which stars 50 Shades’ Dakota Johnson.
Asked why she went the whole hog with Lutz, the cheeky actress told the New York Times: “Why? Undeniably, I would have to say, for the sheer sake of fun above all.
“As my grandmother would have it—a motto to live and die by—‘Dull Not To.’
“My long-held dream was that we would never have addressed this question at all.”
Speaking about her master plan, she said: "My original idea was that Lutz would die during the edit, and his ‘In Memoriam’ be the final credit in the film.”
It comes after she told the crowd at the Venice Film Festival last month that her reclusive German co-star couldn't be there because he was a “private individual who prefers to remain private”.
Tilda said she was always ready to come clean, but "curiously, to date, nobody has thought of the question ‘Are you playing Lutz Ebersdorf?’ And the answer is an unequivocal ‘Yes.’"
The delicate-featured actress underwent four hours in the make-up chair while prosthetics were used to thicken her neck and jawline.
Make-up artist Mark Coulier was tasked with ensuring her character's manhood wasn't questioned.
He said: “She had this nice, weighty set of genitalia so that she could feel it dangling between her legs, and she managed to get it out on set on a couple of occasions."
Suspiria is set in the late 1970s before the fall of the Berlin Wall, Swinton plays dance teacher Blanc, who has survived the the Nazi’s and the Second World War, but at a cost.
Her school is the cover for a coven who prey on young aspiring talent. Ebersdorf plays Dr. Klemperer, the psychoanalyst who gets drawn into the mysterious, occult affair.
50 Shades of Gray’s star Johnson - who plays one of the troupe - needed therapy after making the movie which premiered at Venice film festival.
The film, which opens in November in the UK, also stars Kick Ass’s Chloe Grace Moretz.
