A 69 year-old man is in a serious condition in hospital after an alleged attack outside a pub in Bolton.

Emergency services were scrambled to the Flag Inn on Arnold Road in Bromley Cross just before 11:30pm on Friday night.

They said they found a 69 year-old man with serious head injuries. He was rushed to hospital where is currently receiving treatment.

A 23 year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The area outside the pub remained taped off today as detectives carried out enquiries into the incident.

And they are appealing for anyone who may information to come forward.

GMP said in a statement today: "Shortly after 11.25pm on Friday 24 May 2019, police were called to reports that a man had been assaulted outside a pub on Arnold Road in Bromley Cross, Bolton. 

"Officers attended and a 69-year-old man was taken to hospital where he remains for treatment for serious head injuries. 

"A 23-year-old man was arrested nearby on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent. He remains in custody for questioning. 

"A scene remains in place and enquiries are ongoing."

"This was a serious assault, and there is currently a scene being resourced by officers. I would urge anyone with 'pertinent' information to contact the police immediately.

"The police will be increasing patrols within the area, not least for reassurance purposes."
