A man was stabbed after he was set upon behind a leisure centre.

The knifeman attacked his victim, a man in his 40s, in Woodchurch on the Wirral last night.

The man was stabbed in his calf during what Merseyside Police are treating as a targeted attack at around 8.15pm on fields at the back of Woodchurch Leisure Centre.

Police said the victim's injuries are not life-threatening and he has been treated in hospital.

A manhunt is now underway to find the knifeman who is thought to be be aged between 19 and 20.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "Detectives are appealing for information following the stabbing of a man in Birkenhead last night.

"At 8.15pm, officers were called to Carr Bridge Road in Woodchurch to reports of a man in his 40s having been stabbed in the calf. "

He added: "He was treated at hospital for a non life-threatening injury. The suspect is described as white, 19-20 years old, of slim build and with dark hair.

"The incident is believed to have happened on fields at the rear of Woodchurch Leisure Centre. Enquiries are continuing."
Residents took to social media after the incident with reports there was "a man lying on the path" while others said police cars had been going around the nearby Woodchurch estate."

Detective Inspector Nick Suffield said: "This initially appears to have been a targeted attack and we're appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

"Thankfully the victim's injuries are not serious but all knife assaults have the potential for catastrophic consequences."
