A police officer was injured after a driver crashed a Mercedes into two cars while speeding away from the scene of a city centre brawl.

Police were called to Newton Street in the Northern Quarter at around 2.30am on Sunday, a GMP spokesman said.

One person was arrested on suspicion of theft.

Another suspect drove off from the scene in a Mercedes, before crashing into an Audi and Seat car. The driver then sped away without stopping.

A GMP spokesman described the officer's injuries as 'minor'.

Newton Street was cordoned off for several hours following the incident.

Police were called to the scene

Specialist officers were seen combing the area for evidence until 4.30am.

A GMP spokesman said: "We were called to reports of an incident on Newton Street at about 2.30am.

The street was cordoned off for several hours

"It looks like there was a male fighting other people. Someone has driven off from the scene and collided with two vehicles.

"An officer suffered minor injuries. The reason why there was a cordon was due to the damaged cars.

"The driver left the scene."
