Police helpless as man hijacks plane and 'threats to crash into supermarket'

planes were reportedly stolen and pilots threaten to crash into a supermarket.

The pilot allegedly circled Tupelo, Mississippi, USA for hours and deliberately threatened to crash into a Walmart.

The Beechcraft King Air 90 plane is a small aircraft, seats nine and he has two engines. Police said it was stolen by an airport employee at Tupelo Airport around 5 a.m.

Tupelo Police Department (TPD) confirmed it was investigating an emergency call received early in the morning.

They also said the pilot contacted emergency services when he threatened to crash.

Police have spoken directly to the hijackers, but their motives remain unclear.

Police also confirmed Walmart was evacuated and people dispersed from surrounding areas.

Residents have been told to avoid the area until authorities clarify everything.

According to the Daily Journal, airport employees claim the plane left Tupelo's airspace. "That could change quickly," the report adds.

TPD stated in a statement:

"TPD worked with Dodges in Wal-Mart West and West Main to evacuate stores and disperse people as much as possible. TPD was also able to speak directly to the pilots.

"Currently, the situation is ongoing and TPD and all emergency services in our region are on alert.

" Citizens are asked to avoid the area until all clear.Given the maneuverability of that type of plane, the danger zone is much greater than Tupelo."

People in this region reacted to the confusion on Twitter.

One said: "I woke up with a plane flying over Tupelo's father's neighborhood, threatening to hit their Walmart. It's been going on since 5am."
