Robbie Savage has belittled Celtic's Nine In A Row and insists it's comparable to getting promoted from England's second tier.

That claim left Chris Sutton baffled as he insisted that along with the original Celtic Nine In A Row in the sixties and seventies, it's the greatest achievement that has ever happened in club football in the UK.

That includes Manchester United's treble season, the Arsenal 'invincibles' and Leicester City winning the English Premier League.

But Savage, who failed to win a league title during his 18-year professional career, branded Sutton a "clown" for his claims as the pair clashed on BBC radio.

The duo were on 5Live to discuss this week's football news and have regularly been involved in winding each other up on social media in recent years.

And when Sutton was asked about the success of Celtic, he said: "What an achievement. On these shores the two biggest achievements in club football have come from Celtic.

"The Lisbon Lions, they won nine in a row from 66 to 74 and then the Celtic team from the last nine years. Phenomenal achievement.

"I get there are some big achievements from teams down south, (Manchester) United won the treble - what a team that was.

"But I’m afraid Celtic, Rob, and you’d agree with this, that’s unbelievable what they’ve achieved."

But Savage hit back: “Fantastic achievement, winning nine titles in a row is probably like getting promoted from the Championship here.”

That started a lengthy debate between the pair with Sutton saying: “Coming from a guy who has never won a title. Don’t be bitter Rob.

Savage said: You’re surely not saying nine in a row in the Scottish premiership is up there with what? Give me an analogy? What is it better than?

"Is it better than Leicester City winning the Premier League?"

Sutton replied: “Yes"

Savage added: "Oh my. Is it better than the Arsenal invincible season?"

Sutton: “Of course it is.. They’ve won nine titles in a row. Absolutely. What about the Celtic invincibles?

Savage: "I’ve got to come in here, because the lines will light up after that statement from this clown. You cannot say that winning the Scottish Premiership nine times in a row is better than the Arsenal invincible season.

"You are saying that nine in a row is better than Arsenal’s invincible season and Leicester City winning the league? Are you saying that?"

Sutton: "Absolutely. And I’ll tell you why, what about the Celtic invincibles?

"Have you forgotten about that? And in Celtic’s invincible season they won both cups as well. Arsenal didn’t win the two cups. They lost to Middlesbrough in one of them. They only scored 72 goals, Celtic scored 106 goals.

"What about that? That superseded the Arsenal invincibles. Put that in your pipe."
