Senior royals will be forced to attend hundreds more engagements after Harry and Meghan step down and Andrew ‘sacked’

THE Royal Family will need to attend hundreds more engagements after Prince Harry, Meghan and the Duke of York stepped back from official duties.

The trio attended a combined 558 events on behalf of Her Majesty last year, a study by The Sun has found.

That means the Queen and senior officials face the headache of trying to find senior royals to attend more than one extra event every day for the next 12 months.

The situation is made all the more difficult by the fact the Queen, who will turn 94 this year, has already scaled back the work she does.

And 98-year-old Prince Philip has retired due to his ongoing health problems.

Yesterday, a royal source said the situation may see the Queen forced to carry out more duties herself.

That pressure will be all the more acute because 2020 is a massive year with events including the 75th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day in May.

'SENIOR ROYALS MUST STEP UP'

The insider told The Sun: “To lose three senior members of the Royal Family in such quick succession has been an absolute disaster for the Queen.

“Not only has she had to deal with weeks and weeks of negative headlines, but it has left gaping holes in the royal diary.

“Senior members of The Firm will be expected to step up and work harder.”

Figures show that Royals attended 3,567 official engagements last year.
The number was a slight drop on 2018 which has already led to criticism and will only put further pressure on the now threadbare Royal Family to up their workload.
Prince Charles was the hardest working Royal last year attending 521 engagements.
His sister, Anne, was next busiest carrying out 506.
Despite now being 93, the Queen still turned up to 300 events in 2019 - nearly one a day.
This was more than William, who carried out 220 and Harry who looked after 201.
Kate, who may now also be more heavily leaned on to take on extra work, attended 126.
Megan, who was on maternity leave for much of the year, looked after 83 engagements.

Before he stepped back from Royal life in the wake of the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, the Duke of York was reportedly keen for his daughters Eugenie and Beatrice to be given more responsibility.
However this is unlikely to provide a solution for courtiers - not least because Beatrice is due to marry Edoardo Mozzi.
