Templegate’s racing tips: Newmarket – Top betting preview for ITV’s racing on Tuesday, April 16

NEWMARKET

1.50

Feel the Power for this sprint handicap. GREEN POWER has the benefit of a run this season.

He was beaten less than a length when fourth behind Foolaad at Doncaster a couple of weeks ago.

That was a nice starting point to the season on his first run since being gelded during the winter.

My fancy – trained by John Gallagher – has a nice draw for a prominent racer and I expect him to use his fitness edge to his advantage under Ryan Moore.

Tommy Taylor was a couple of lengths behind Green Power at Doncaster. His slow start didn’t help matters and he’s likely to take a fair step forward today.

He wouldn’t want to miss the break again as it’s not easy to make ground up on this track but he does have claims.

Flavius Titus is interesting. He’s been gelded since his last run so has the potential to improve this season. His wins have come over 7f but he hasn’t exactly had many chances over sprint distances.

SHINE SO BRIGHT should sparkle in the Bet365 European Free Handicap.

He made a winning debut as a two-year-old last season prompting King Power Racing to splash out to buy him on the eve of Royal Ascot.

It looked a wise move when he ran a belter in fifth behind Calyx and Advertise in the Coventry Stakes.

After switching to Andrew Balding he hit he frame in the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood and York’s Gimcrack.

Neither of those Group 2s were vintage races but Shine So Bright still brings a decent level of form here. His final start of last season came on ground way too soft and I’m expecting today’s extra furlong to suit him.

Today’s conditions are a concern for Azano. He was well beaten on his debut when tried on quick ground and it was on the easy side when he bolted up at Yarmouth.

There’s no doubt his Newbury second behind Saturday’s Greenham winner Mohaather is the strongest form on offer today but that came on soft ground.

His pedigree gives his supporters hope he’ll handle the going but it’s far from guaranteed.

3.00

It should pay to KICK ON in the Bet365 Feilden Stakes.

He has some decent course form having made most of the running to land a hot 1m maiden last September.

It was a big ask to go from that to the Group 1 Vertem Futurity Trophy at Doncaster but he wasn’t disgraced in finishing in midfield when he wasn’t ideally placed.

The faster ground is a bit of an unknown. His pedigree gives mixed signals on that score but I think it’s worth chancing him.

Western Australia finished in front of my fancy at Doncaster but he had way more experience when finishing a surprise third in that top contest.

It’s not hard to expect him to improve for his Dundalk second behind Playa Del Puente last month but he is starting to look exposed.

Walkinthesand went close on his debut before notching up a nice victory in a small-field Sandown contest. He has potential.

Take a chance on QABALA in the Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes.

I usually favour experience in races like this Group 3 but I’ve a feeling Roger Varian’s once-raced filly is up to the job.

She got up close home to be beat race-fit Desirous over today’s course and distance on her debut in September. That form has worked out well and the quick ground suits her.

Stablemate Mot Juste took a big step forward from a Beverley novice race to beat Angel’s Hideaway and Sunday Star in the Oh So Sharp Stakes at this track last October.

She got the run of the race that day while the runner-up didn’t. I’m no convinced the form is particularly strong and Main Edition could be a bigger threat.

Her only defeat in her first five starts came when badly hampered in the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes.
