The attacks come as relations between Russia and the US remained strained and have been thrust into the spotlight in the wake of the Mueller report. According to The New York Times, the US has increased the number of cyber attacks on Russia’s grid. Moreover, two administration officials had told the newspaper that Donald Trump had not been briefed on the attacks.

Pentagon officials have also described the “broad hesitation” to tell Trump about the details of the operations against Russia.

The officials also told the New York Times that they resisted telling Trump certain pieces of information amid the fear that he may reverse the work.

The news of cyber attacks on the country comes following Trump’s announcement that there will be a further 1,000 troops deployed to Poland.

Speaking on the deployment of the additional forces, Eric Pahon, a Defense Department spokesman said: “This is about creating the infrastructure and the abilities to respond to a variety of security threats that face the NATO alliance.”

Away from the strained ties with Russia, Trump has also blamed Iran for the recent attacks on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman.

Following the President’s recent remarks that Washington was “not ready” to do a deal with Tehran he also blamed the Islamic Republic for the recent attack.

Citing a video which reportedly shows Iranian involvement in the attack, Trump said: “Iran did do it and you know they did it because you saw the boat.

“Iran written all over it.”

Trump also added that his administration is yet to respond but that it "won't be taken lightly”.

Recently, Japan’s President Shinzo Abe recently visited Iran in order to act as a mediator between the two countries.

The US President had given his blessing from Mr Abe to meditate but this last development could jeopardise any hopes of peace talks.

Trump said: “While I very much appreciate Prime Minister Abe going to Iran to meet with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, I personally feel that it is too soon to even think about making a deal.”
