The UK's fattest town revealed in unhealthiest areas list – see if your home is on it

The people of Hartlepool have been ranked as the most obese town in the UK, while those living in Peterborough have been labelled as the most unhealthy overall, a study has revealed

The 20 least healthy areas in the UK have been revealed – with one town taking the biscuit (no pun intended) for being the fattest around.

A new study put together by health and wellness experts at Blue Horizon Blood Tests has assessed various UK local authorities, government districts, boroughs, and counties to figure out which one is the best . . . and worse, when it comes to health.

At one end of the scale, South Hams on the coast of Devon actually emerged as the healthiest area in the UK for 2023, securing a stellar score of 80 out of 100.

But the picture wasn't the best for the locals in Peterborough, as that was labelled as the least healthy area in 2023, scoring 40 out of 100.

However, that doesn't answer the question of which one is the fattest – or most obese, to use the technical terms.

That honour goes to Hartlepool, as the report found that 74.6% of adults in the area are overweight or obtuse, despite 51.3% of adults being physically active.

Despite having such shocking obese stats, Hartlepool is not near the top, or bottom, of the list, as the aforementioned Peterborough ranked so low before it has a poor air quality rating, 28.7% of adults are reported to have cancer, and 60.7% of adults are overweight or obese.

Added together to make an average score of 40, it makes for some grim reading for the locals.

Coming in second was Gosport with 50.9, which has a high alcohol-specific hospitalisation level of 765.7 people out of every 100k, and a diabetes rate of 35.4%.

Despite that, 59.3% of locals managed to consume the recommended fruit and vegetable portions per day.

But where does your home area rank?

As we said, the top spot goes to Peterbourgh, with Gosport in second, followed by Portsmouth, Liverpool, Kingston up Hull, Knowsley, Gloucester, Blackpool, Nottingham, Great Yarmouth, Harlow, Lancaster, Hammersmith and Fulham, Southampton, Hartlepool, Melton, York, Telfrod and Wrekin, Sandwell and Mansfield.
