Thug who showed no remorse jailed for glass attack in Kendal pub

A THUG who smashed a glass into the face of a man inside a Kendal pub leaving him permanently scarred has been jailed.

Sean Buchanan, 27, and his victim Stephen Grattan were part of the same social group at the George and Dragon in Market Place on November 22.

Carlisle Crown Court heard Buchanan reacted violently because he was unhappy Mr Grattan - someone he’d taken a dislike to - hadn’t earlier spoken to him.

Prosecutor Daniel Bramhall said: “The defendant firstly threw a pint of beer at his face, followed by the glass itself, followed by a punch being delivered which caused him to fall to the floor for approximately 20 seconds.”

“He was assessed the next day and staff removed glass from a cut."

Buchanan, of Greengate, Kendal, admitted unlawful wounding and was sentenced to a 28 month jail term.

The prosecutor added: “There is a clear indication that Mr Buchanan has no remorse whatsoever for the offence. “Indeed he has a certain amount of contempt for Mr Grattan himself. Worryingly there is some satisfaction from the defendant at the injuries.”

Harriet Tighe, defending, said Buchanan accepted probation's conclusion that prison was the only option. She said: “The strongest piece of mitigation I can advance on behalf of this defendant is his early guilty plea on his first appearance.

Recorder Jeremy Lasker said: “You told a probation officer you weren’t sorry and, in your words, you didn’t give a s**t about it.

"He could have actually lost an eye.” The judge also added: “The injuries, although not life-threatening, were serious and could have been a lot more serious.”
