The survey revealed half of Americans expect conflict as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to rise. The poll, carried out by Ipsos for Reuters and, shows that while Americans are more concerned about Iran as a security threat, few back a pre-emptive attack on the Iranian military. However, citizens said that should Iran attack the US’ military first, around 80 percent felt the Trump Administration should strike back.

The poll took place between May 17 and 20, during which time both sparring nations have issued chilling threats of conflict.

Despite their concerns, 60 percent of Americans said the US should not conduct a pre-emptive attack on the Iranian military, while 12 percent backed plans to strike first.

Their relations soured further after US President Donald Trump hardened his anti-Iran stance, restoring all sanctions on Iranian oil exports.

Trump has responded to threats from Iran, claiming that the US would respond with “great force” if Tehran attempted anything against Washington’s interests in the Middle East.
