WATCH: NHS worker and sister 'traumatised' after Keighley crash

A HOSPITAL worker and her little sister have been left "traumatised" after a shocking head-on collision during the school-run.

West Yorkshire Police received a report of a collision involving a black Vauxhall Vectra and a silver Nissan Juke yesterday morning.

It happened on Belgrave Road, in Keighley, at around 8.16am.

A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, described the road as a popular school-run route and says there have been problems on it in the past.

The T&A was sent two videos of the crash, which show slightly different angles.

One shows the black Vectra come round the corner where Belgrave Road and Sunny Mount meet.

The other captures the moment the two vehicles hit each other.

The Vectra comes into the shot from the left of the screen, as the Juke approaches from the right.

Both cars are travelling down the middle of the road as the sides are full with parked cars.

The vehicles then collide with a puff of smoke appearing where they both came into contact.

The driver of the Juke, who did not wish to be named, said she was travelling to work at Airedale General Hospital and had her little sister in the car, who she drops off at school on her way to her job.

They had only been in the car for 30 seconds when the accident happened.

The driver said: "As we approached the corner I slowed down, the Vectra flew round the corner and I slammed on.

"He didn't appear to stop and collided straight in to my car.

"Me and my sister are both shook up and traumatised from this.

"I have been driving for seven years and never once had an accident.

"We are attending A&E for minor injuries.

"The driver fled the scene and the police are currently tracing him down.

"Drivers like this need to be more vigilant.

"We are so lucky to have come out of the accident with little damages.

"I'm just glad we are okay. Cars can be replaced I suppose."

The footage shows the Juke being sent backwards by the force of the crash, while the Vectra pulls to a halt with smoke billowing from its bonnet.

The local resident, who witnessed the collision, said the driver of the Vectra then proceeded to move off from the scene, just moments after the crash.

When police officers arrived the Vectra was nowhere to be seen.

They instead found the silver Nissan Juke which was damaged.

The driver was treated for minor injuries at the scene, according to a West Yorkshire Police spokesperson.

Enquiries led to the recovery of a black Vauxhall Vectra a short distance away by police officers.

The local resident said people speed up and down the road all day long.

They added: “The speed bumps do not deter this from happening.

“Residents feel that the corners are too tight and blind, therefore deep speed bumps should be put before the corners and on the road so that cars slow down.

“This is a popular road for school runs and we do not want children to be involved in car accidents.”

Belgrave Road is a long, winding road that has two sharp corners.

West Cliffe Montessori School and Nursery can be accessed by turning off Belgrave Road onto Mornington Street and then onto either Barlow Road or Leith Street.

Victoria Primary School, in Cartmel Road, which had 338 pupils on the school roll during its last Ofsted inspection in November 2019, is also in close proximity of Belgrave Road.

The local resident said the crash could have been a lot worse given the road’s makeup and where it is situated.

They added: “It was very lucky.

“Imagine a child or children were crossing before the cars or on the middle of the road.

“Then we’d be talking about a fatal accident.

“Both corners are way too tight.”

Police are continuing to investigate the collision.
