Mr Michael Yao Tsuiatorfe, Municipal Director of Education, Ketu South has called on well-meaning citizens to come to the aid of education delivery in the Municipality.
He said with the burden on government to provide social amenities across the country, it was expedient that the chiefs, Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), other groups and individuals put in resources to support numerous problems facing the education sector in the Municipality.
Mr Tsuiatorfe made the call during a donation of assorted facilities to Ativuta RC Basic School, established some 61 years ago by a native and businessman, Mr Ability Yacub Adzagey, to improve teaching and learning and develop sports and music there.
The donated items included textbooks, uniforms for boys and girls, pairs of shoes for boys and girls, dual desks, tables and chairs for computer laboratory, white marker boards, LED projector, laptops, a printer, football jerseys, volleyball and handball jerseys for boys and girls, football boots, shin-guards, bibs, brass band set and dance bar set.
The donor is also renovating an 11-unit classroom block in addition to constructing computer and science laboratories, library, storeroom, staff common room, staff accommodation, water closet toilets for both teachers and pupils and a fence wall around the school.
The Municipal Director commended Mr Adzagey for his benevolence saying, such self-help projects by organisations, old students, PTAs and philanthropists could contribute tremendously to education delivery in Ketu South.
He called on others for support saying, many schools in the Municipality were suffering from acute furniture problems, inadequate classrooms with others in dilapidated state.
Mr Tsuiatorfe charged leadership of the school to see to the safety of the donated items for “projects of this nature are hard to come.”
He appealed to the Municipal Assembly to help fix bad roads in the Municipality especially the Diamond Cement Road and other roads in that category noting, the roads were being demotivation factors to acceptance of transfers or reposting in the Municipality, thus, affecting an even distribution of teachers in the schools.
Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Member of Parliament for Ketu South said Mr Adzagey had shown them the difference by putting in his personal money to improve the school and not leaving it to the state and politicians to take care of.
She welcomed other citizens to identify the needs of various communities and support so that together, they could make Ketu South “great and strong.”
