Management of the Golden Sunbeam International School at Adentan in Accra has invested over $100,000 in COVID-19 safety equipment to make the campus safe for stakeholders.

The investment went into the procurement of automatic water taps, face masks, a disinfection chamber fitted with an infrared temperature gun, isolation area and water dispensers, among other things.

As part of the preventive measures, the school has reduced class sizes to a maximum of 15 to enhance social distancing as well as hourly disinfection of the classrooms.

Mrs Monica Ohene Opare, the Co-Founder of the School, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said those were measures put in place to safeguard safety of students, teachers and other stakeholders in the school’s environment.

She said the School’s COVID-19 preventive strategy was guided by the Ghana Education Service and the US Centre for Disease Control directives for re-opening of schools.

Mrs Opare urged parents to take more interest in safety protocols in schools their children attended to curb the spread of the virus.

“The only way parents can be certain that their children will be safe when they return to the classrooms is by visiting campuses and personally inspecting COVID-19 preventive measures that have been put in place,” she said.

She said the school adopted an online teaching programme to ensure teaching and learning were not affected due to the shutdown of schools for 10 months because of the covid-19.

Mrs Opare said the online programme required that each student must possess an educational electronic tablet to ensure full participation of all.

Ms Eunice Mettle-Nunoo, a Junior High School Student, said although she was initially apprehensive about returning to school, she now felt safer due to the measures put in place by the school.

“COVID-19 is a very deadly disease that is killing people and some measures have been put in place such as social distancing, wearing masks and not sharing tools,” she said.

“Our campus is now very different from 10 months ago and feels safer, we have a lot of sinks, sanitisers and cleaning booths around and the teachers also ensure that we keep our masks on at all times.”
