Tramadol abuse responsible for student rioting – GES reveals

General News of Monday, 4 June 2018

There have been reports of students rampaging in some schools

The Ashanti Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has revealed that there is widespread abuse of Tramadol in some Senior High Schools in the Region.

The Directorate said the drug abuse could be blamed for the recent violent clashes and disturbances recorded in some of the schools in the region last year.

The Regional Directorate says it has since increased the monitoring in various Senior High Schools across the region to eliminate the practice.

Committees set up to investigate rioting by students of the SIMMS and the Kofi Agyei Senior High Schools in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti region revealed that the students who were behind such disturbances were on drugs including Tramadol.

The Kwabre East Municipal Education Directorate last year ordered the closure of the SIMMS Senior High School after second and third-year students went on a rampage.

The students questioned what they said was preferential dining hall treatment given to their first-year juniors on Government’s Free Senior High School policy.

The rampaging students damaged public and private property, including school furniture, electricity meters and cables as well as two cars belonging to some staff.

Students of the Kofi Agyei Senior High School also went on a rampage and vandalised school properties in the process. Reports presented by separate committees set up to investigate the disturbances revealed the intake of Tramadol and other drugs by the students.

Mrs Mary Owusu Achiaw is Ashanti Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service says the directorate to end the abuse of the drug in Senior High Schools in the region.
