We Have To Make The Learning Space Safe – Prof Osafo To Authorities | Education

Senior Psychologist, Professor Joseph Osafo has called on the authorities in the education sector to thoroughly sift the textbooks made available to school children.

A primary four history textbook has become a serious matter of concern after parts of its contents listing disadvantages of religion, particularly Christianity, surfaced in the media.

The history textbook for basic 4 pupils on religion titled “History of Ghana for Basic Schools“, authored by Francis Benjamin Appiah and Henry David Appiah, a section lists the negative effects of Christian missionary activities.

Among the points listed, it is stated that “Christianity has led to an increase in poverty in Ghana“.

The book further opined that religion is a major cause of physical and doctrinal disputes in the country.

Professor Joseph Osafo expressed worry that this textbook got to the market, wondering the damage it could cause to the school children.

Speaking on Peace FM’s morning show “Kokrokoo“, he charged the authorities to do due diligence before approving learning materials.

“We have to make the learning space very safe because there is information overload now in our world. The children even have various gadgets they can use to surf information all over the world. So, if we are also going to give them textbooks that we haven’t verified its contents before circulating for studies, then we have a lot to do”, he stated.
