Youth Activist Mr Ali S. Ceesay who is a third-year Political Science Major at the University of The Gambia has written an open letter to Gambian President Adama Barrow urging him to address corruption in the country. Mr Ceesay is a civil activist and political analyst who hosts radio programs on national issues.
Below is his open letter.
Dear President Adama Barrow,
I am writing this open letter to you as a concerned citizen of The Gambia. I write this letter with a heavy heart as our beloved country is currently facing several challenges that require urgent attention.
Sir, as you know, The Gambia has been facing political, economic, and social issues for a long time. Despite your efforts to bring change and development into the country, the situation seems to be worsening day by day.
One of the major issues that need addressing is the high level of corruption in the government and public institutions. The National Audit Report had revealed the mismanagement of public funds and other related cases like such which left concerned Gambians so pessimistic about the future of this country under your leadership. Corruption has not only affected the country’s economic growth but has also affected the quality of life of ordinary citizens. Therefore, I strongly urge you to take more robust measures to tackle corruption in the country.
Another pressing issue that needs attention is unemployment. The high unemployment rate in the country has led to many social issues, including poverty, crime, and drug abuse. This continues to challenge the security of the country which many especially the elderly and even youth are worried about and some can’t afford to stay but to leave by any means possible. Therefore, I request you to implement policies that will create job opportunities for young people in the country.
Further, the education and health sectors in the country need attention. The quality of education is still poor in many parts of the country, and the same goes for the health sector. Many rural areas lack access to basic healthcare facilities, which has caused an increase in the maternal and infant mortality rate.
Ultimately, I have the belief that leadership is about service. Thus, you must come out to serve the public the right information as it may be, and clear the information which may be misinforming as portrayed against you or as it may concern you as President of the Republic of The Gambia. This is what we have seen Presidents of other states doing: serving information which enlightens the general citizenry about certain sensitive national matters boiling in the media to build back the confidence of people about your government and governance processes. The statements by your spokesperson from you are not enough for the justification of certain burning national matters, come out and serve the public with healthy and clear information to foster national peace and unity which complement and propel national development.
Sir, I believe that you have the ability to bring positive change to our beloved country. With your leadership and the support of the citizens, we can make a significant difference in the country’s development. Therefore, I urge you to take immediate action to address the issues mentioned above.
Thank you for considering this open letter, and I hope that you will take the necessary steps to make our country a better place for all.
