Amnesty International Kanifing Municipality (KM) group issued a press release on Monday 3rd April 2023 condemning a recent case of child abuse that occurred in Sukuta, West Coast Region.

It all started making the media rounds on Sunday 3rd April 2023 when a photo of a young innocent girl went viral on social media picturing a young innocent teenager horribly tied to a tree as a form of punishment by an alleged uncle.

“We strongly condemn any form of child abuse and torture, and we stand in solidarity with the victim during this difficult time,”  Amnesty International KM condemns.

In another release issued on Wednesday 5th April 2023, the human rights defendant informed that the Vice President of Amnesty International KM group, Muhammed O Sey has engaged the Ministry of Gender and Social Welfare on Tuesday 4th April 2023 who confirmed that action has been taken already against the alleged uncle of the child.

The Ministry “have confirmed that the man behind the scene was an uncle to the said child and they have already taken action by arresting the alleged culprit and sending a social worker to take the child involved to their shelter for further investigation,” says the Vice President of Amnesty International KM group.

The release also revealed that during their inquiries about the child, they received information that “the child has been facing such punishment in myriad circumstances over and over again without help”.
