Obituary: Momodou Lamma Jallow

Indeed we belong to Allah (SWT) and indeed to Him (Allah) we will return (Quran 2:156). The death has been announced – our comrade, friend, brother, uncle, son, father, and husband, Momodou Lamma Jallow (fondly Lamma), of Raleigh, NC (USA), passed away on Wednesday April 3, 2023.

Lamma, an entrepreneur and successful businessman, enjoyed family time and was dedicated to serving his customers.

Lamma left lasting love marks in all those who came in contact with him, especially younger mentees he held so dear; he was a great coach, one that was very thorough, and said few words.

Lamma’s brilliance, kindness, and humility placed him well in his community and beyond.

Lamma’s pursuit for higher education took him far: St. Peters High School, Gambia High School A’ Level, UK, and the U.S. He was a celebrated computer programmer.

Lamma is a founding member of Gainako; he was there to hatch the eggshell of the paper on September 12, 2006, and his technical and editorial skills were a trailblazer. He designed, authored, co-edited, and published articles at Gainako for years.

At a much younger age in life, Lamma was a soccer legend, and always wrote about Gambia’s soccer, and his favorite team he played for, “UNICLAM!” In one of his favorite articles he published on Gainako on January 9, 2007, “UNICAM –A Naweetan Phenomenon,” Lamma wrote, “But what happens on that Sunday September 10, 1989, was no miracle; instead, it was the culminations of years of playing together in the Serekunda west junior Naweetan league as little boys, and later as young adults played in different teams before finally came together as one unified team.”

Lamma is survived by his wonderful wife, Ndey Anta Sankareh-Jallow, son, Alasan, daughters, Neneh and Sirra, mother, and his brothers.

Lamma will be laid to rest in Raleigh (NC) on Friday, May 5, 2023. My sincere condolences to his immediate family, his friends, and comrades the world over. May Allah SWT grant him the highest jannah! Ameen.
