iciHaiti - Social : International Day Against Racism, message from Lesly Condé

Tuesday, March 21, 2023, as part of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Lesly Condé Former Consul General of Haiti in Chicago (August 2004 - May 2018), delivered a message of reflections that we invite you to read and share.

Message from Lesly Condé :

"Members of all Haitian communities,
Friends of Haiti,
Fré m ak sè m yo

The 'International Day of Struggle for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination' is a very important day for any citizen who is interested in justice. Racial discrimination is one of the major challenges of our species, and even our countless advances in all fields fail to help us completely eradicate this evil which is the source of horrible injustice and unimaginable suffering. It is, of course, not the most pleasant of all subjects, but since racial discrimination does exist, and it affects our lives far more than we are prepared to admit, we have to were talking.

Indeed, the human race has reached a stage of development which allows it to eliminate so many frontiers. Communication is becoming easier and easier between people of different cultures, and modern means of transport make it easier to connect any point on the planet to any other. Thanks to all this progress and all these exchanges, our planet is like a community that draws its wealth from its diversity. On the other hand, the disparities are palpable from one point of the planet to another. We won't even talk about historical realities since that's another conversation. Either way, sometimes outrageous disparities combine with persistent stereotypes to breed prejudice. These prejudices are responsible for racial discrimination. Racial discrimination leads to horrific injustice and unimaginable suffering when it becomes part of corporate or government practices.

We must continue to form enlightened generations who will not reproduce the stereotypes and exaggerations of which prejudice and contempt are the results.

In closing, I thank you all for your attention. I also invite you to always keep room in your heart for a little optimism and empathy. Finally, I wish you much success in all your endeavours."
