Since January 1st, more than 7,500 people have been left on trolleys at University Hospital Galway – with almost 2,300 admitted without a bed at Portiuncula

UHG has been the third most over-crowded hospital this year, behind University Hospital Limerick at 17,000, and Cork University Hospital at 10,000
101,240 patients have been on trolleys in hospitals nationwide so far in 2023.
582 people are waiting for beds today alone.
Limerick University Hospital is once again the worst affected by overcrowding, with 82 patients on trolleys, and that’s followed by 57 at University Hospital Galway, and 54 at Sligo University Hospital.
The Executive Council of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation met yesterday and General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha says “behind the trolley figures every day are extremely vulnerable patients being treated in undignified and dangerous conditions.”
She says it’s “shocking that the necessary measures have not been taken by the HSE and individual hospital groups to alleviate this level of overcrowding.
