Concern as 33 jobs to be axed at Donegal fish producer

A total of 33 jobs are to be lost at the fish producing plant operated by Mowi Ireland in Fanad.

The job cuts will be implemented from Monday next.

The company, Ireland’s largest producer of farmed Atlantic salmon, confirmed the job losses in a statement.

There had been fears for job losses as far back as May that there would be job losses at the Rinmore plant.

The company says the decision has been taken following a global review to streamline processing plants which are ‘under capacity’. It added that secondary fish processing is to cease in Ireland in the autumn.

“It is with great regret that Mowi Ireland has announced that it has begun a programme of consultation with staff regarding a reduction in employee numbers,” a spokesperson for the company said.

“Following a global review, a decision has been reached to streamline a number of processing plants which are under capacity.

“This will result in secondary fish processing ceasing in Ireland by October 2023 leading to a number of redundancies at the company’s Rinmore base in Fanad, Donegal.”
