Daily Briefing Feb. 7: IDF rescue forces in Turkey for quake relief

Welcome to The Times of Israel’s Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what’s happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday.

Military correspondent Emanuel Fabian and news editor Amy Spiro join host Amanda Borschel-Dan in today’s episode.

In the wake of the deadly earthquake yesterday in Turkey and Syria, the IDF has already sent two teams of military rescue experts to Turkey. What kind of expertise do the teams making up Operation Olive Branches have?

Yesterday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel also plans to send aid to Syria. Such aid is thought to include tents, medication, and blankets. Who is meant to carry it out?

Out of the 31 ministries in the current government sworn in at the end of December, not one minister has appointed a woman to serve as director general. Twenty-three of the positions have been filled by men. This is regrettable, but is it unusual?

Several Palestinian gunmen were killed in a military raid near Jericho, as part of an operation to apprehend suspects involved in a shooting attack on a restaurant located about 20 minutes from the Dead Sea, close to Jericho. Fabian explains the historic nature of the operation.

Finally, based on her recent in-depth feature on the Hapoel Jerusalem women’s soccer team, Spiro describes the factors that have contributed to the relatively beneficial opportunities afforded to the team.
