Guard crushed by gate at Jerusalem police station, badly wounded

A civilian security guard was badly wounded early Friday morning when he was crushed by a heavy electronic gate at a Jerusalem police station, rescue services said.

The Israel Fire and Rescue Services said firefighters using “advanced hydraulic systems” rescued the man from between the gate and a wall at a police detention facility in central Jerusalem, known as the Russian Compound.

The unconscious man was handed over to the Magen David Adom ambulance service, who took him to the Shaare Zedek hospital in Jerusalem for further treatment. He was listed in serious condition.

Israel Police and the Fire and Rescue Services said the guard got stuck while attempting to pass the gate as it was opening at around 4 a.m.

“When we arrived at the scene, we identified a young man in his 20s whose entire body was trapped between the vehicle gate and the perimeter fence, unconscious,” said Lt. Rami Monsonego, the deputy shift commander of a nearby firefighting station.

“We disconnected energy sources to the gate and worked to rescue him using hydraulic rescue kits and dedicated means for such a complex rescue. After a few minutes, we rescued the guard and transferred him to MDA for treatment, which evacuated him from the scene while carrying out intensive resuscitation efforts,” he added.

Police said it had launched an investigation into the incident, and had forward a report “to the appropriate authorities.”
