Dental assistants to receive payments under new wage structure next week - Tufton

By Racquel Porter

The Ministry of Health and Wellness is reporting that dental assistants will receive payments under the government's new compensation structure next week.

This comes after dental assistants staged an islandwide protest Wednesday on the issue.

The assistants outlined that despite inking the wage deal last month, the adjustments are yet to be reflected in their salaries.

Speaking with Radio Jamaica News on Wednesday afternoon, Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton said the issue of retroactive payments related to the compensation review programme has been settled.

"My team at the ministry in collaboration and the Ministry of Finance are communicating with them and their union representatives and hopefully that will bring a resolution to the problem as soon as possible. So I don't anticipate that [the protest] will last beyond today," Dr. Tufton said.

He suggested the issue did not require a demonstration but simply "communication and clarity".

"I only heard about it when I saw the demonstration taking place. But the matter can be easily resolved and will be resolved with them being paid next week, I'm told – by next week Wednesday.
