Don't sign new contracts, trade unionist urges security guards

President of the Union of Clerical Administrative and Supervisory Employees [UCASE] Vincent Morrison has urged security guards not to sign contracts being offered to them that would see them lose overdue benefits.

Mr Morrison, told Radio Jamaica News that guards are being offered contracts from their respective companies which would invalidate the benefits they would be entitled to following the recent court ruling to move them from independent contractors to employees.

He said legal advice is being sought to allow the union to better advise the guards.

Mr. Morrison has again sharply criticised the Ministry of Labour for what he says is its absence from the deliberations concerning the security guards.

Last week, Gillian Corrodus, Divisional Director of  Industrial Relations & Allied Services in the Labour Ministry, told Radio Jamaica News that  meetings were held with some guards who sought clarification on the one-year contracts being offered.

She said, based on what was explained, the guards should not be at a disadvantage as the contracts are part of the change-over process.
