'Dust nuisance from South Coast Highway project a public health risk'

By Halshane Burke

Health officials are labelling as a public health risk, the continued dust nuisance associated with the rehabilitative work being carried out on the Southern Coastal Highway Improvement project in St. Thomas.

Several business owners along the affected stretch have complained that the dust nuisance has been having an adverse impact on business.

Dr. D'Oyen Smith, Medical Officer of Health for St. Thomas, said the dust is a major risk which can trigger respiratory conditions, including allergies and asthma, as well as exacerbate heart problems.

He said the public health officials have met with contractors on the road project who have "put forward a schedule that will improve the watering of the road and release the dust nuisance".

Dr. Smith was addressing the monthly sitting of the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation.
