Earthquake rattles parts of Trinidad

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 rattled several parts of Trinidad this morning, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The quake, which occurred at 6.31, had a depth of eight kilometres.

The Seismic Research Centre of the St. Augustine campus of the University of West Indies said the tremor was felt 41 kilometres west of the capital, Port of Spain, 67 kilometres west of Arima, and 70 kilometres west of San Fernando, the second most populous municipality in Trinidad, south of the capital.

The Centre said another quake with a magnitude 3.5 was recorded four seconds after midnight, affecting Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica and Guadeloupe.

That quake had a depth of 49 kilometres.
