Five persons wounded, $23 million stolen in robbery at Portmore ATM

The police are continuing their investigations following an armed robbery at a Scotiabank Automated Teller Machine, in Braeton Park, Portmore, St Catherine on Sunday.

Five persons were wounded in the attack; four security guards and a licensed firearm holder.

Their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The attackers reportedly stole $23.2 million.

It was reported that sometime after midday, members of a security team employed by Beryllium went to the Bank of Nova Scotia located at Braeton Parkway to service the ATMs.

Shortly after  they exited the security vehicle they were attacked by men traveling in two vehicles - a Subaru and a Toyota Axio.

The officers took cover and returned fire.

Three members of the security team were shot.

A fourth security guard received injuries to both knees, hands, and back that were not consistent with gunshot wounds.

The licensed firearm holder had challenged the gunmen and received a gunshot wound to his left buttock.

The robbers reportedly abandoned the two get-away vehicles believed to have been used in the attack.

The vehicles were found in Lakes Pen, St Catherine.

Senior Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay, head of the Corporate Communications Unit of the Jamaica Constabulary Force,  told Radio Jamaica News that the police are hoping to make an early breakthrough in their investigation.

Security assessment

In the wake of the latest attack on its personnel, Security firm Beryllium Limited has advised that it is assessing its operations island-wide and has warned there could be delays in service delivery as a consequence.

Less than a month ago, gunmen attacked another Beryllium team at Portmore Pines plaza, leaving a security guard dead and two others wounded.

Scotia branch closure

Scotiabank has also advised that its Portmore branch will be closed to the public on Monday as result of Sunday's robbery in the vicinity of the branch.

The company also condemned the act of violence.

It has advised that all its other branches remain open for service and that customers may also use online channels to conduct transactions.
