Jamaica’s international squash player Chris Binnie secured a significant victory on the first day of the national senior trials at the Liguanea Club on Thursday.
Binnie dominated the number five seed Bruce Burrowes in a straight 3-0 win with scores of 11-9, 11-9, and 11-8. Although Burrowes held brief leads in each set, he couldn’t convert them into wins.
After the match, Binnie commented, “I think that shows, you come, you have to play, and everyone is competitive, and today he took it to me, and it was really close so I am happy to get a three-love win and I am looking forward to tomorrow (Friday).”
Burrowes acknowledged Binnie’s skills, stating that he is a “top-notch player” and “definitely of a different level than the local boys that I am able to train with here.”
The trials opened with Dane Schwier, the number four seed, beating the number six seed Stephan Morrison in a 3-0 victory. Additionally, the number two seed and national champion Julian Morrison defeated the Under-19 champion and number seven seed Tobias Levy in a straight 3-0 win.
These trials will determine Jamaica’s teams for the 2023 Pan American Games and the Senior Caribbean Squash Championship.
