Gov't moving to stop illegal sale of lots in Naseberry Villa, St. Catherine

By Halshane Burke

The government is stepping in to halt the illegal sale of lots in Naseberry Villa in St. Catherine.

Hundreds of residents reported that they paid millions of dollars to people purporting to be representatives of the Ministry of Housing for the lots they now occupy.

The property was formerly under the Operation Pride programme.

Dr. Christopher Tufton, Member of parliament for the area in West Central St. Catherine, said the Housing Agency of Jamaica (HAJ) will be regularising those now occupying the land.

"What we have to ensure is that we stop or cauterise any further such action from being taken. Those who are selling the land that don't own the land are actually committing an illegal act and it's a police matter and if we have to involve the police we will. Now, we're not going to...make victims out of the people who have paid over and are living on the land. We're going to try and put them in a good place," he said.

The HAJ is to conduct a census to determine how many people were affected by the illegal sale of the lots.
