Holness admits electoral fatigue affecting public perception of gov't

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has admitted that public perception of his administration is being negatively affected by electoral fatigue mid-way through the electoral term.

Mr. Holness said this is the reality of every government, except for one in Central America.

Noting that fatigue is genuine, he said his administration went through a 100-year event which diverted the energy, creativity and attention of the Cabinet to focus on the COVID-19 pandemic.

He argued that efforts to ensure the country came out strong after the pandemic would have derailed other projects.

"Of course, the country coming out without having to contend with the gloom and doom of an economic downturn immediately forgets that, and the focus is, well, what about the things that you had promised us, then you pile on to that inflation. So obviously, the fatigue would have worsened."

Mr. Holness said the government is concerned, but admitted "We did expect it. And a part of our response has to be a recalibration in how we communicate. We can't take it for granted that people understand what is happening."
