Man drowns in Clarendon pond

The body of 28-year-old Odain Bailey was fished from a pond in Turners, Clarendon, on Thursday.

Bailey reportedly went fishing in the pond about 3 p.m. on Wednesday. He is alleged to have seen a turtle which he attempted to catch, but lost his balance and fell from an embankment into the murky water.

A relative, who was fishing alongside Bailey, tried to help by giving him a piece of stick to get out. However, his efforts were in vain.

Members of the Jamaica Fire Brigade were called to the area to assist with the search. However, it had to be called off at nightfall on Wednesday.

Ammoya Bailey, Odain's sister, said no one from the family could sleep knowing that he had not been located on Wednesday night.

"Mi nuh sleep none at all," she said.

"Dis one mash up mi entire family... mi neva expect dis at all," she added.

Odain's cousin, Lavern Bailey, described Wednesday night as terrible. "I couldn't sleep, knowing that I lost a loved one," she said.

Odain's body was pulled from the pond early Thursday morning by one of his friends. The recovery of the body left many persons agasp, many of them teary-eyed. Patricia Smith-Mitchell, a resident of Turners, was among them.

"Mi grow him like mi son," she said as tears rolled down her face.
