OCA to visit Newell High in response to video of teacher threatening student

By Lorraine Mendez

Representatives from the Office of the Children's Advocate will be visiting Newell High School in St. Elizabeth to carry out intervention and sensitisation sessions.

This is in response to an incident at the school in which a teacher was captured on video verbally abusing, chasing and threatening students.

The teacher told the students that he has killed before and would be willing to do it again.

The video has been widely circulated on social media.

Speaking with Radio Jamaica News on Thursday afternoon, Children's Advocate Diahann Gordon Harrison said she was deeply disturbed by the conduct of the teacher.

She said his actions demonstrate "an absolute disregard for how conflicts are resolved" and possibly "an unsuitablility...to be a part of the noble teaching profession".

While she admitted that teachers are faced with difficult circumstances, Mrs Gordon Harrison said they must know how to self-regulate and respond appropriately.

Mrs Williams said she has received reports that this is not the first time the teacher has threatened students.

The school's board chairman has called an emergency meeting for Friday to address the matter.

The incident is being investigated by the police.
