PM admits road maintenance budget needs to be bolstered

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has admitted that there is need to increase the road maintenance budget.

Responding to questions raised by Member of Parliament for Manchester North West, Mikael Phillips, about the way forward after the damage, Mr. Holness acknowledged that improving the country's drainage system would have to be done as well as increasing the road maintenance budget and schedule.

At this point, however, he noted that the government is "spending as much as we can".

He revealed that he has signed off on "another round of routine maintenance" so Members of Parliament will get an additional allocation to complete drain cleaning.

Mr. Holness has said approximately 47 roads were badly affected by landslides, downed trees and flooding from rains associated with Tropical Storm Ian.

Most the damage was in St. Catherine and Clarendon.

He said most of the affected roads have been reopened.
