PM urges everyone to prepare for Tropical Storm Ian

Prime Minister Andrew Holness who returned to the island on Friday, has appealed for everyone to ensure they are in a state of readiness for Tropical Storm Ian, paying attention to basic precautions such as having sufficient basic food items during the passage of the storm and securing important documents.

He urged as well that where trees are situated close to houses they should be pruned to minimise the possibility of damage being done to the building during the storm.

Mr Holness disclosed that approximately 70 fishers on the cays have refused instructions by the Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard to return to the mainland.

When he addressed the matter on Friday afternoon, he said then that it was "not too late to make a request (for Coast Guard assistance in evacuating) or to make your way back to the island."
