Police worried funds from Portmore heist could be used to buy guns and result in killings

By Kimone Witter

The police are concerned that the money from Sunday's heist at the Scotiabank automated teller machine (ATM), in Braeton Park, Portmore, St. Catherine, will result in killings and the purchase of guns and ammunition.

Senior Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay, head of the Corporate Communications Unit of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, said every effort is being made to recover the stolen funds - reported to be $23.2 million - as it could have consequences for the robbers and residents of the areas they frequent.

"It's not unusual for us to now see in-fighting among criminal groups for the spoils and it's not unusual for them to direct the funds into getting additional guns and ammunition to strengthen their criminal network, so it's usually the citizens that suffer in these instances. And that is why we'd love for them to help in any way they can to get these persons apprehended," SSP Lindsay pleaded.

The police have also commended the licensed firearm holder who challenged the gunmen in Sunday's robbery. SSP Lindsay admitted that the person's actions "probably prevented things from getting worse".

The licensed firearm holder was wounded in the incident.

SSP Lindsay said the police are trying to determine the extent of the man's injuries.
