Portmore stakeholders call for measures to stop attacks on armoured couriers

By Kimone Witter

Norman Walker, President of the Sunshine City Chamber of Commerce, is hopeful that the police and business community will devise solutions to discourage attacks on armoured couriers.

A meeting is underway involving the police and representatives of the business community in Portmore, St. Catherine.

Speaking with Radio Jamaica News ahead of Thursday morning's meeting, Mr. Walker said the incidents, which resulted in the death of one guard and wounding of six others, have left the business community feeling nervous and extremely concerned.

"This has been an extremely new development that we have not been able to put our finger on the pulse as yet. We are hoping today from this meeting that hopefully, that we'll be in a better position to really chart a course and to see how we can strategise going forward," he said.

Mr. Walker added that the placement of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras around the municipality will be one of the suggestions on the table to help make the city more secure. He said the business community will be encouraged to assist with purchasing the cameras.
